Yes, I've got the default theme, and all plugins deactivated. The site that I'm doing this on is literally an empty site I've been using to test stuff out on, and I've really not changed much on it.

Maybe it depends on what browser you use. At this time on Firefox you can use any text for a placeholder in date field.
